Someone told me a few months ago that they never expected this to happen to me. I was quite taken aback by this because she is someone I have known since I was about 4 and so she does know me quite well but I didn’t think much else of it. Recently however, I’ve had this comment made to me numerous times which has really got me thinking about how anxiety can affect people.
I think I was always considered quite an outgoing, loud person especially in primary school. I also received many comments about how I always seemed so happy and was always smiling so I was probably one of the people you would least expect to suffer from something like this. But I think this just shows how it can affect anyone at any time. I was also considered quite bright by some people so they struggled to come to terms with what was going on because they never saw that something like this could happen to a seemingly clever person.
Anxiety can strike anyone at any time. There is no specific ‘type of person’ who will suffer from anxiety. It can be triggered by a traumatic event which will often lead to things like PTSD. It’s not your fault that you experienced that event and your body is only trying to protect you from having to experience the same trauma again by producing the reaction in anxiety.
It’s only a chemical reaction or different hormones in your brain so it can’t be your fault. Anyone can have this chemical reaction to something and it doesn’t really have anything to do with the type of person you are. You may be more likely to have a mental illness but just because you’re a certain type of person, doesn’t mean you will or won’t have one. There is so much more to a person than their problems and I think that when you’re in the depths of these problems, this is hard to remember.
Breaking down the stigma about who can suffer from mental health problems and the type of people they will be such an important thing that will help people understand mental health problems. A huge myth surrounding is about the people who can suffer so breaking this down will aid understanding. It will also help people who suffer from mental health problems because the lack of education leads some of them to believe that there is something wrong with them: a flaw in their personality.
Anxiety is not a permeant problem and will go away with the right help and support. This is an important thing to remember as you will beat anxiety! Yes, it’s happened to you but it won’t be there forever. And remember, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!
