On Thursday, I got my GCSE results. This might seem rather unimportant to other people but it was a big deal for me as these were the first big set of exams I had done.
To be honest, I did not have high expectations for my results, and I certainly was not expecting what I got! During the exams, I struggled. I was not eating because I was really struggling with body image which meant I was feeling faint, dizzy and exhausted constantly so couldn’t concentrate. I also wasn’t sleeping because I was so anxious which did not help with the issues I was already struggling with. This meant that during exams, I wasn’t able to focus on the questions or perform to the best of my ability because I was SO tired! In one exam, it was so bad and I had such a bad headache that I put my head down on the desk and could feel myself falling asleep!
I never found GCSE’s academically challenging and pretty much sailed through them. However, it did become much more difficult when I was not in very many lessons for their entirety. I missed out on so much work so there were huge gaps in my notes, especially geography which I always had a huge problem with staying in the lessons because I was in a small room with a very loud and annoying class. My worst time was probably the end of year 10 when I was doing all my coursework, so of course my coursework grades were lower than I would have liked them to be and brought my grades down.
However, I was pleasantly surprised on results day when I opened the envelope. I always wanted to get straight A/A* grades but I never expected it and was even guessing what subjects I had not got A/A*s in the night before!
I’m so proud of myself because I’ve had a difficult two years so never thought that I would be able to even get to my exams, let alone get the grades I did.
Maths: A. – I have been consistent with maths over the past two years, never getting below an A but the first exam this year was absolutely dreadful so I was concerned I had not done well, despite finding the second exam rather easy.
Religious Studies: A* - I’ve always been good at RS and achieved 100% in both my mocks so I was pretty sure I had got this grade.
Biology: A* - Biology was another one of my stronger subjects which I am taking for A level. I was quite confident about this because I know I worked hard but my mock was only a B so I was a little surprised.
Chemistry: A – I’m slightly disappointed in this grade to be honest. I worked really hard for chemistry but my coursework let me down. I remember the day I did my coursework exam and it was awful. I cried and it took three teachers to convince me to go in and do it. I got high A*s in 2 of my exams and a high A in the other but my B coursework meant I missed out by a few marks.
Physics: A – I was worried about this grade because my mock exam was a B and I had a very bad teacher in year 10. I know you shouldn’t blame the teacher but I was never really taught anything and I was in an awful class as well.
Product Design: A – I was told my coursework was a high A but it’s gone down to a B which meant I didn’t get an A* but I’m not really that bothered because it’s still an A.
English Language: A – WHAT?! I have never gotten an A in English Language because I’m absolutely awful at it but somehow managed to get an A in the exam and in coursework!! I’m so happy because I needed a B in it to do psychology A level. I was so surprised at this because the exam was quite weird and I’m not entirely sure I answered the questions properly.
Geography: A* - I have never got below an A in geography so this was not unexpected but I got almost 100% in one paper which was quite unexpected!
English Literature: A* - I’m quite surprised at this as I never even got to the end of ‘Of Mice and Men’! I was told the exam would be on Curley so I only revised him, but it wasn’t so I thought I’d failed. I got A*s in both of the exams so I’m really happy about that!
Computing: A – I’m so surprised about this because I had a bad teacher for two years and I only got one proper theory lesson. I taught myself all the theory and still managed a B in the exam!!
History: A* - I think this was the one I was most shocked by. My mock exam was a B which I was disappointed in. I worked really hard with my revision but the questions in the exam were just not what I was prepared for and I cried after both exams. As you may know, I’ve got a lot of respect for my history teacher because he was so amazing and I guess I only have him to thank for this grade!
